HORSHAM Mayor David Grimble has thrown his support behind Horsham War Memorial Pool after a draft sports and recreation plan recommended it be demolished.
The Mail-Times reported on Wednesday that despite continued community support for the Wimmera's only Olympic-size pool, it was once again on the chopping block.
A draft Sports and Recreation Strategy 2013-2018 found the pool did not meet 'relevant regulations and standards' and was not well used.
Horsham Rural City Council has allocated $383,000 in its 2013-14 budget to disconnect pipes to smaller outdoor pools, replace filtration, build a wet deck and repaint the pool.
Mallee Labor candidate Lydia Senior announced on August 23 that the pool would receive a $208,600 grant for upgrades through the Regional Development Australia fund.
But the draft strategy recommended council list any pool upgrades as a low priority.
Cr Grimble said the upgrades could help keep the pool running for the next five to 10 years.
He said there was 'no question' the community supported the pool, especially because of its war memorial significance.
"We are trying to do these works to keep the pool in the short-to-medium term until council can work out what to do long term," he said.
"From a regional perspective, we need to be able to offer an operational pool like this at a price within our budget.
"I just want to reassure the community that the recommendation to demolish the pool is certainly a recommendation from a consultant and not council.
"There is strong support in the community and certainly within the council chamber for the pool."
In an online Mail-Times survey involving 68 people, more than 90 per cent wanted the memorial pool to stay.
The Mail-Times' Facebook page has also been inundated with comments from Wimmera residents supporting the pool.
"It's bad enough the middle-size pool is out of action, but to take this one also is ridiculous," Julie Coutts said.
"If it's the only Olympic-size pool, then where will future hopefuls train?"
Lianne Geue said the outdoor memorial pool was a better option than the indoor pool during summer.
"The indoor pool is ridiculous over summer too hot and crowded," she said.
"I have never swum in it and never will. The outdoor pool is great on a Wimmera summer's day."
