WIMMERA Roller Derby League members had an opportunity to learn from their Bendigo counterparts at the weekend.
A Dragon City Derby Dolls league referee and a coach and player from The ChikoRollers ran three sessions at Horsham Showground.
Wimmera league president Amy Jay said the sessions were a great success.
“It went really well. We had a great turn out of members, with 25 out of 30 able to make it,” she said.
Jay said there were two sessions on Saturday and one on Sunday in the Maydale Pavilion.
“The first was for intermediate skaters. They helped us with blocking and hip checks, which are moves we do in roller derby to keep people from getting past us,” she said.
She said sessions for beginners concentrated on endurance and basic skills drills.
Staff from Bladeworx in Hawthorn, a renowned skate shop within the roller derby community, also visited Horsham on Sunday.
“They sold skates and safety equipment to a fair few newer members,” she said.
“It was great to have them come up. It’s good to shop locally but our options are limited here so a lot of people buy skates online.”
Jay said the Wimmera group was working towards competing.
“We’ve been training for about 12 months,” she said.
“When we started we wanted to be competing within two years and we’re well and truly on our way.”
She said the Wimmera had enough members to field two teams.
“Ultimately we’d like to build a league in the region,” she said.
“We’d also like a travelling team to compete against leagues in Mildura, Bendigo, Melbourne and Geelong.”
Jay said people interested in roller derby were welcome to attend one of three weekly beginner training sessions.
“We’re always on the look-out for new members,” she said.
“You don’t just go out there and start competing – people have to pass four levels before they can compete, which can take from six to 24 months.
“It’s quite a long time, because you’re learning a new set of physical skills.”
She said the league had about 12 sets of skates which could be used on a come and try basis.
“People might just want to come along and give skating a go,” she said.
Beginner sessions are in Horsham on Thursday nights and in Rupanyup and Warracknabeal on Sundays.
