TEN Wimmera families have completed an eight-week program aimed at strengthening their relationships with schools.
Wimmera Uniting Care’s FAST program – Families And Schools Together – is a family-focused program open to prep and grade one families.
Child and family manager Jane Freak said FAST was an innovative and collaborative prevention program in which whole families participated in specific, fun, research-based activities aimed at strengthening families, empowering parents and building better links within the school and community.
“FAST is a world-wide program that has been successfully replicated in more than 400 primary schools,” she said.
“It is researched to show improvements in children’s behaviours at home and school, parent-child relationships, school and home links, stress reduction and social and support networks.”
Ms Freak said Wimmera Uniting Care had run a FAST program each year for almost 11 years and planned to continue to offer the program to schools across the Wimmera.
Zac Clark participated in the program with his son Blair.
He said his family was now equipped with some useful tools to help them at home and throughout the school year.
“The program was enjoyable and it has made Blair and me closer as father and son,” he said.
