SERVICETON Bowling Club celebrated the opening of its 2013-14 season on Sunday.
Secretary Deane Makin wished everyone good bowling for the season before introducing chairwoman Glenda Tink.
Makin rolled the first jack, while Max Brown declared the season officially open and rolled the first bowl.
Brown reminisced about his first day playing bowls. He visited the club in 1950 and found it was one player short for the day’s pairs competition.
He was asked to play and when someone pointed out he was not a member, his father hurriedly paid the membership fee of two guineas.
Brown and his partner won the day and Brown was presented with a teaspoon.
Sunday’s progressive triples competition was won by Ian Tink, Les Millikin and Colleen Preece, who were presented with club glasses.
There will be no bowling at the weekend – the next competition will be on October 5.
Organisers said bowling would be followed by a barbecue tea and asked members to bring a salad to share.
They said people were invited to join in club bowls on Saturdays.
Names must be in by 1pm, with the competition to start at 1.15pm.
Organisers said the club had spare bowls and people needed to wear flat-soled shoes.
They said people could call 5393 1244 for more information.
