Paramedics took the Beechworth man, 60, to Wimmera Base Hospital via ambulance after he fell but he was transferred overnight.
Horsham Sergeant Julie Bergen said the man fell about five metres.
"He lost his grip and fell backwards, and landed on his back," she said.
"His helmet hit rocks and he was unconscious for about five minutes."
Sgt Bergen said a doctor was also climbing on the day and treated the injured man until paramedics arrived.
She said fellow climbers helped paramedics carry the man into the ambulance.
"He had broken ribs and hip injuries," she said.
The man is in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
