CRICKET season starts a week early for Halls Gap Super 8s tournament competitors.
The 10-team tournament, which runs at Halls Gap and Pomonal cricket clubs on Saturday and Sunday, will be a chance for cricketers to dust off the cobwebs and find some form in an enjoyable atmosphere.
Halls Gap Cricket Club committee member Neill McIntosh said there was already plenty of interest for the seven-over a side matches.
“It’s our first go of hosting an event like this and we’ve had a great response,” he said.
“It’s ‘crash and bash’ sort of cricket and it’ll be fun for all ages.
“We’re hoping people come down and make a weekend of it.”
Horsham Cricket Association side Homers will be involved, along with teams from the Grampians and Colac.
First prize is $1000 and runners-up get $250.
Those watching the tournament also have a chance to win.
Spectators who catch a six will get their choice of a Halls Gap Bakery pie or a pot of beer from Halls Gap Hotel.
Former Australian Test cricketer Dean Jones will be a special guest at the tournament and will speak on Saturday night at the Halls Gap Cricket Club pavillion, with tickets to the trivia night $30 a head.
McIntosh said late team entries would be accepted until 5pm Wednesday.
McIntosh said those interested in entering a team could call him on 0417 554 619 or Pomonal Cricket Club’s Terry May on 0417 573 217.
