THE Glenelg Highway was closed for about an hour on Tuesday night near Lake Bolac after a driver dodged a kangaroo and crashed into a tree instead.
Ararat State Emergency Service controller Donna Dunmore said units were called out just before 9pm.
She said the car was about five kilometres west of Lake Bolac, heading towards the town, when it crashed.
Mrs Dunmore said the driver, middle-aged woman, was the sole occupant of the car.
"She had a badly broken leg and was air-lifted to hospital - I'm not sure where," she said.
Two Ararat SES units came to her rescue from Ararat, along with one from Mortlake.
Country Fire Authority brigades and police also attended.
Mrs Dunmore said emergency services removed the car's middle pillar and carried the woman out on a spinal board to ensure they did not bend the broken leg.
"The road was closed for about an hour, from about 9.30pm until 10.30pm," she said.
"There were no traffic diversions in place, as the road was very quiet at that time of the night.
"Police were letting a few cars through every now and again."
Royal Melbourne Hospital spokeswoman Melea Tarabay said the woman was in a stable condition.
