THE Wimmera will turn shades of purple from Sunday as Paint the Town Purple kicks off.
The event, which will continue until next Friday, originated in Horsham in 2010 but has taken off throughout Victoria.
Publicity co-ordinator Rene Vivian said the Wimmera event raised awareness of cancer research and of the Horsham and District Relay for Life in March next year.
She said about 50 businesses would dress their windows in purple and yellow and schools would host purple dress days.
The Relay for Life committee also encouraged people to wear purple on Friday next week as part of the event.
Mrs Vivian said many seniors' sporting bodies would also support the event, with croquet, tennis, golf and bowls groups all hosting purple activities.
Horsham's Village Gardens will host a purple luncheon.
Mrs Vivian said some bakeries would also cook food with a purple tinge to celebrate the event.
She asked people to support the event and donate money towards the cause in participating shops.
"We'd encourage everyone to support Paint the Town Purple week because it's a chance for us to remember and celebrate friends who have had cancer or who are going through chemo now,'' she said.
"Very few of us haven't been touched in some way.''
