Jones, 22, pleaded guilty in the Victorian Supreme Court in August to an affray in Horsham in February 2012.
He was sentenced before Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth today.
Jones was involved in an attack on Ben McLeod, who died as a result of injuries sustained during the attack.
Justice Hollingworth heard Jones repeatedly punched and kicked Mr McLeod as he lay on the ground.
She said there was no suggestion other than the remorse implicit in a guilty plea that Jones felt any real remorse for what he had done.
"On the contrary, you have persisted until very recently with the lie that you were not even present when the affray occurred," Justice Hollingworth said.
Jones has already served 419 days of his sentence.
