WIMMERA residents will have an opportunity to influence the system that elects their shire councillors during a public hearing on Tuesday.
An independent panel appointed by the State Government is examining four aspects of local government elections statewide.
These include the electoral process, voter participation, integrity and electoral representation.
The Local Government Electoral Review Panel will convene at Horsham Civic Centre in Roberts Avenue from 3.30pm until about 7.15pm.
Attendees do not have to register if they only intend to watch.
People can also make a public submission online.
Chairman Petro Georgiou said the panel was keen to hear from a broad cross-section of the community about how the system could be improved.
“The way the community exercises its choice over who will represent them and make decisions on civic functions has never been more important,” he said.
“The electoral system that operates in any jurisdiction must be fair, transparent and promote participation.''
Mr Georgiou encouraged people to download and read a discussion paper about the review and go to Tuesday's hearing.
The paper is available at www.localgovernment.vic.gov.au.
The panel will compile and deliver two reports to Minsiter for Local Government Jeanette Powell next year.
One is expected in January, and the second in April.
