ST Brigid’s College in Horsham will help fund a cancer research project after raising nearly $7000 for Relay for Life earlier in the year.
Cancer Council Victoria representative Regan Zaxos attended the school yesterday to present the school with a certificate of appreciation.
She said teams that raised more than $5000 were eligible for a research award.
“The Cancer Council uses this money to support certain projects,’’ she said. “They generally run for about three years.’’
Mrs Zaxos said the school would receive updates on the project their money supported.
St Brigid’s College’s Lesley Lannen said it was the first time the school had earnt enough for a research grant.
She said about 110 students joined in the Relay for Life in March.
Mrs Lannen said the school aimed to have 200 students signed up for the 2014 event, to raise enough for a research grant again.
Mrs Lannen said the school raised money through coloured clothes days, a Shrove Tuesday pancake lunch and school fundraisers.
She said Paint the Town Purple Week kicked off the school’s 2014 fundraising efforts.
Mrs Lannen encouraged people to support Paint the Town Purple and Relay for Life.
