HAY-CUTTING season is in full swing across the Wimmera.
Decent rain has meant Wimmera farmers have not been cutting failed crops for hay like they have in recent years.
Murra Warra farmer Tim Fechner said he started cutting on Friday.
“The season has been really good, we are happy with how it has been,” he said. “The hay is looking good and it looks like we will get good yields as well.”
Mr Fechner grows vetch hay.
He said the excellent growing season also meant hay prices were good.
“From all reports, the prices seem to be quite reasonable,” he said.
The weather has also been kind to farmers. “It has been perfect,” Mr Fechner said.
“Another two weeks like this and we will be laughing.”
Mr Fechner owns hay company T. and S. Hay with his wife Sam.
“We specialise in high quality horse hay,” he said.
Brimpaen farmer Gerard Matthews said he was still a couple of weeks away from hay-cutting.
He said he would have pasture hay and lucerne.
“Our lucerne is growing by the hour and other pastures are also looking excellent at this stage,” he said.
“I think it will be a really good hay season everywhere.
“I’m looking forward to plenty of round bales.”
