VICTORIAN Rugby Union hopefuls Horsham Reds had their first hit-out at a trial match at Alexandra Oval in Ararat on Saturday night.
The Reds joined forces with the Ararat Devils for a match against Victoria Police.
Brock Roberts, Josh Nadalo, Joshua Hiku, Gav Stephenson, Jake Synnix, Pomoi Angue and Roi Coomber were among the Reds’ contingent for the match, with the combine going down 18-4.
President Brock Roberts said numbers had been steady at training, with the club changing from Tuesday and Thursday to Monday and Wednesday from 6pm at Sunnyside.
“We’re staying positive and we’re hoping to continue to grow in numbers leading up to next season,” he said.
“Anyone who is keen on rugby is welcome to come down and give it a go.”
Roberts said a representative from the Victorian Rugby Union was due to visit Horsham next week as the club strived to be accepted into the
VRU’s country league next season.
Clubs currently involved in the six-team division-three competition include Bendigo, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Puckapunyal, Border Army in Albury and Shepparton.
Roberts conceded there would be plenty of driving involved, with the nearest rival club almost 200 kilometres away in Ballarat. The next season is set to kick off in mid-April.
Rugby union will be a part of the Sunnyside Horsham Sporting Club’s open day on October 27, with cricket, tennis and lawn bowls also included.
Roberts said anyone interested in playing rugby could call him on 0422 087 645 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The club is also seeking sponsors.
