FORMER Wimmera Base Hospital nurses travelled from across the country to Horsham for a reunion on Saturday.
The annual reunion brought back memories for the former trainees and associates, including nurses who celebrated 45 years since they started training at the hospital.
Haven’s Helen Simmons was one of 20 women who graduated in the class of 1973.
She said she had not seen some of her colleagues for almost 30 years.
“It was absolutely fabulous to see everyone again,” she said.
“We were able to share a lot of different stories about things that happened in the nursing homes and in the wards.
“We also shared what has happened in our lives since we left Wimmera Base Hospital.”
Mrs Simmons said the group still got on like a house on fire.
“It was as if we had just finished our training because we all got on so well,” she said.
“We were such a close knit group when we were training so it is good to keep that friendship going.
“It was a real blessing to catch up with everyone.”
Mrs Simmons said while only about six women still worked in nursing, they all had a passion for helping others.
“One of the husbands actually picked up on that from the stories we told and said that the group of girls were angels,” she said.
“Back when we trained, nursing was a lot more physical, we did longer hours but because we trained in the wards, we were all people who loved nursing.
“We have decided we must meet again in five years’ time, rather than waiting so long.”
