DUNKELD'S Royal Mail Hotel conference centre has been totally destroyed by fire.
Hamilton police said the hotel's manager discovered the free-standing building, valued up to $1.5 million, fully engulfed in flames about 2am.
Sergeant David Walkley told The Standard there was no threat to accommodation and no patrons were evacuated from the hotel section.
"The building was totally destroyed and a crime scene was established awaiting further investigations,'' he said.
"There's no way to tell at this point what started the fire as it was fully engulfed in flames when discovered."
Crews from Hamilton, Victoria Valley, Dunkeld, Glenthompson and Penshurst attended.
The cause of the fire is being investigated but not being treated as suspicious.
Sgt Walkley said the building was a recent addition to the hotel, constructed in the past 10 or 15 years.
The site is part of the larger Royal Mail Hotel, a well-known tourist attraction that was not affected by the fire.
Business has resumed as normal.
