THE Wimmera will be well represented in the Western Waves junior squads in 2013-14, with nine players from across the region selected.
The region dominated selection in the under-14 squad, with five juniors from each of the Horsham, West Wimmera and Wimmera-Mallee cricket associations making the final cut.
Horsham Saints youngster Dawson Cross will represent Horsham, while Joe Reid, Keelan Westerland and Jack Landrigan will play for Wimmera-Mallee.
Louis Preston will represent West Wimmera.
Kiata young gun Todd Alexander is the region’s lone representative in the under-16 side.
West Wimmera will also be represented in the under-18 team, with Darcy Preston making the squad.
Horsham Saint Josh Carroll and Jung Tiger Angus Adams will also play for the Waves’ under-18 team this season.
Western county regional cricket manager Stephen Field said five Wimmera representatives in the under-14 squad was the most the region had had in a single Waves team.
“There’s a terrific young core of players from the Wimmera, and the Wimmera-Mallee association – three players is the most they’ve had in a team” he said.
“I don’t think there’s necessarily a reason for it and these things tend to be cyclical, but especially in the Wimmera having the junior camp at Donald in the past few years has really helped some of the younger players.”
Field said it was a difficult task to select the sides but felt there was a good balance of players in each team.
