WIMMERA started strongly but just fell short of promotion at the Golf Victoria Men’s Country Week championship at Eynesbury Golf Course.
The team – which consisted of top players from clubs in the region – dominated Kara Kara in the first round to record 5.5 wins to 1.5 in matchplay.
Horsham’s Levi Burns stood out in the second round against South Gippsland in a tight four-matches-to-three win.
Wimmera met Northern on the second day of last month’s competition and just missed out in a 4-3 loss despite being the underdog.
Captain Shane Grover, Scott Boschen and Burns all recorded wins.
Wimmera’s fourth match against East Gippsland was originally scheduled to be played at Kooringal but was rescheduled because of wild weather damage.
The team put up a strong effort against its toughest competition for the week and almost created an upset, losing by only one match.
Junior Casey Schmidt competed in his first match and won five and three.
Ben Campbell also showed the Wimmera had a strong future by winning his match.
The Golf Victoria Country Team selection was announced at the end of the day, with Levi Burns named the outstanding player of the week and earning his place in the team.
The week was successful, with Wimmera holding its place in division three.
In the end it was only one game away from taking second place and gaining promotion into division two.
