Acting principal Graeme Holmes took over from former principal Frank Spiel on January 1.
He will be in the role for the duration of the first term.
Since he started, he has welcomed 16 new staff to the school community.
"I have been really impressed," he said.
"The students have been very cool, calm and organised, and settled into their classes well."
Mr Holmes said teachers were equally ready to start the year.
"My motto is, the learning journey continues," he said.
"There is always something to learn, no matter how young or old you are."
Mr Holmes was formerly the acting principal of Apollo Bay P-12 College.
His top priorities for the first term include kick-starting the college's Hands-on Learning program.
Mr Holmes said about 20 students would work with BlazeAid as part of the initiative.
Horsham College's appointment process for a permanent principal is proceeding.
