Horsham electricians Lachie Trigg and Mitch Turner were driving in Edith Street about 4pm when they saw smoke coming from the roof of a house.
"We were working in the area," Mr Trigg said.
"We thought the smoke was coming from the chimney at first.
"We stopped and just got the garden hose and started putting the fire out."
Horsham Fire Brigade attended shortly after and the fire was extinguished by 5pm.
Brigade captain Mat Walsh said the pair's actions stopped the fire from spreading before the brigade arrived.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
