Witmitz, who races for Team Budget Forklifts, could not quite catch fellow Victorian Brenton Jones on the line and finished second.
Jones completed the Bendigo CBD race in 46:32.
German cyclist Leif Lampater finished third, while Horsham product and Avanti Racing Team cyclist Mark O'Brien came 22nd.
Just 26 out of the 59 starters finished the race.
Witmitz and O'Brien enjoyed success in the sprint classification, finishing second and fourth respectively.
Witmitz topped the lap 20 and lap 25 sprints and finished third in the lap 10 and 15 sprints, while O'Brien placed second in the lap 10 sprint.
Both Wimmera cyclists were set to compete in the Bendigo Madison last night.
