Wimmera Development Association and Wimmera councils have joined together for the Regional Victoria Living Expo, which is designed to showcase opportunities outside metropolitan areas and drive population growth in regional and rural Victoria.
Thousands of people are expected to visit the event over three days.
We know from past expos just how valuable they can be in attracting people to live and work in our region.
Sometimes we take where we live for granted and we focus on the shortcomings: we have to travel long distances to attend major events such as AFL footy or the grand prix, our access to public transport isn't as easy as for those in big cities and the closest beach is a few hours away.
But we have a lot to be grateful for and a lot to offer.
We have great schools, affordable housing, brilliant produce and some of the best natural attractions and landscapes in the state not to mention plenty of career opportunities and great people.
Something that is often talked about is the way small communities like those in our region come together in times of crisis.
The community spirit we have in the Wimmera and the way people get in and help others is something to be admired.
The Grampians and Mallee fires in January are testament to that, as are the many major events we have had in the region in the past month alone.
There are so many benefits to living in the Wimmera and we are lucky to live where we do let's hope those at the Regional Victoria Living Expo see that too.
