Mr Leeder completed his apprenticeship in November 2013 and now works full-time as a
qualified carpenter with Shane Driller Building Contractor in Horsham.
He was nominated by Murray Mallee Training Company where he completed a certificate three in carpentry.
He was presented with the award at a ceremony in Warrnambool on Thursday.
He said he was unsure what gave him the edge over the other nominated apprentices.
“It’s probably just the opinion of the boss and trade school teacher,” Mr Leeder said.
He said part of the interview process was to tell the panel where he saw himself in five years.
Mr Leeder now qualifies for the state-wide awards in Melbourne in May.
He will travel to Melbourne on Thursday next week for another round of interviews.
In the long term, Mr Leeder hopes to mentor an apprentice of his own one day.
“I wouldn’t mind owning my own business, I’ll be looking at that one day,” he said.
“To be running your own business and having people working for you would be ideal.”
