Laharum v Kalkee
Ground: Cameron Oval, Laharum, Saturday, 2.20pm.
Umpires: C. Pickering and P. Van Dyk.
Last time they met: Grand final, 2013. Laharum 15.9 (99) d Kalkee 12.10 (82).
THE 2014 Horsham District Football Netball League season will begin as last year ended – with a meeting between Laharum and Kalkee.
While the stakes will not be as high, neither side is underestimating the importance of a win on Saturday.
Laharum will unfurl last season’s premiership flag at Cameron Oval before the clash, but coach Shannon Argall said the players’ focus would be entirely on this year.
“We haven’t mentioned the grand final in the build-up to the match, we’ve just gone about our normal training plan,” he said.
“Obviously unveiling the flag is going to be a really proud moment, but 2014 is a new season so there’s no reason for there to be any flow-on from last year.”
While the Mountain Men will unveil prized recruits Dylan Parish and Oliver Braithwaite for the first time, Kalkee might miss some stars of its own.
Adam Carter will play in the Horsham Cricket Association grand final and Oliver Young will miss while Zavier Hobbs and Tim Wade were listed as questionable by coach Trevor O’Brien.
O’Brien said the team’s job remained the same no matter which players took the field.
The Kees will include their own recruits Shaun Gilbert, Nick Thomson and George Massa.
Jordie Johns and Matt and Jamie Nield and Matt Hobbs will also be called up for seniors duty.
O’Brien said the grand final defeat had been mentioned in the lead-up to the match, but not in a motivational manner.
“I’ve definitely mentioned the grand final,” he said.
“Not that I’m building that as a reason to win or anything like that – I’m just showing them where some things might have gone wrong.
“It’s not like we’re going out to get one back on Laharum.
"We’re only playing for four points on Saturday – we’ll never get back what we lost last year.”
