Horsham Inspector Trevor Ashton said the Horsham man, 28, was seriously injured about 3.30am on Tuesday.
“Police attended a domestic-related incident, where people were heavily intoxicated,” he said.
“A Horsham man, 26, brandishing a knife, was involved in a heated argument, which led to a fight between two males.
“When the victim, a man, 28, was punched he was unaware the other man had a knife.
“He received a serious injury to one of his fingers, which we believe might have to be amputated.”
The alleged offender was arrested and interviewed at Horsham Police Station.
“Charges are pending,” Mr Ashton said.
The victim was taken to Geelong Hospital for surgery.
