Horsham Crime Investigation Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Travis Kerr said the vehicle’s occupant initially believed he was near Mt Arapiles.
“But inquiries by Horsham police revealed he had given a wrong location,” he said.
He said the man’s vehicle had rolled down the embankment of Taylors Road, Bungalally, near Green Lake.
“He ended up being right in near the lake itself,” Det Acting Sgt Kerr said.
Police, State Emergency Service volunteers from Stawell and Horsham and concerned members of the public helped the man out of his vehicle.
“He was then taken to Wimmera Base Hospital for treatment for minor injuries,” Det Acting Sgt Kerr said.
Emergency services could not comment on how long the misdirection delayed the rescue.
Police investigations are continuing.
