The event starts on Thursday and finishes the following Wednesday.
Wimmera Uniting Care child and family services manager Jane Freak said schools and organisations throughout the Wimmera would host events to celebrate the week.
She said Wimmera Uniting Care would include special families week activities in its Young Parents Group in Horsham and Mother Goose Playgroup at St Arnaud.
People could call her on 5362 4000 or visit the agency website to find out about other activities planned in the Wimmera.
She encouraged groups hosting activities to tell Wimmera Uniting Care for promotion on its website.
"National Families Week is a time to celebrate with your family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community,'' she said.
"It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and to make the most of family life.
"Let's take the time to reflect on the critical role that families play in teaching, supporting and nurturing children, especially as they grow.''
Ms Freak said the theme Stronger Families, Stronger Communities highlighted the fact that community well-being was enhanced by family well-being.
She said families could find tools and tips on the Wimmera Uniting Care website www.wuc.org.au, including advice and tools for parents, preschoolers, primary school-aged children and teenagers, along with other resources.
Thursday also marks the United Nations International Day of Families, while this year is the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family.
