Detective Senior Constable Brad McKenzie said a man walked into a Baillie Street service station at 4.50am on Saturday and demanded cash and cigarettes.
"He left the service station empty-handed," he said.
Police arrested Gavin Willshire, 29, shortly afterwards.
He was charged with armed robbery and unlawful assault, and appeared in Ararat Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Willshire did not apply for bail and was remanded to Horsham Magistrate's Court on May 28.
