Work to complete the new network will take about a year.
On completion, 356 premises will be able to access the NBN in Ararat and Pomonal.
NBN spokesman Trent Williams said the new network would provide access to faster and more reliable internet.
“The NBN can open up opportunities for families and business owners to better participate in the digital economy,” he said.
“Fast broadband can help deliver improved access to e-health resources, online education, teleworking opportunities and entertainment on demand.
“For many farms, homes and businesses in rural and regional areas, the rollout of the NBN will provide access to internet speeds and bandwidth that many in the big cities take for granted.”
