Police believe Darling could still be in Ararat and have urged him to turn himself in.
However, Detective Acting Superintendent Ian Campbell said Darling had enough cash to pay for interstate travel.
"We are aware that he has been saving some money over a period of time," he said.
He said several people had reported sightings of the sex offender to police.
But none of the sightings had come to fruition.
"At this stage we've had a lot of assistance from the public," Det Acting Superintendent Campbell said.
He said police were unsure whether Darling had fled interstate.
"He may be about the Ararat area but at this stage we're unclear of his whereabouts," he said.
"We don't have any specific intelligence or advice.''
Det Acting Superintendent Campbell said Darling remained a threat.
"In my view he has been classified as a registered high-risk sex offender, so I would say yes most definitely he is a high-risk sex offender and he is a risk," he said.
He urged anyone with information to ring 000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
