TAYLORS Lake held off Natimuk United in the final quarter of a scrappy but entertaining game at Dock Lake Reserve for its fifth win of the year.
The Lakers trailed in the early stages, but came back strongly in the third term to take the lead.
Despite the Rams drawing within a goal in the last quarter, they were unable to reclaim the lead and went down by nine points.
Nathan Koenig starred up forward for the Lakers with 10 goals.
It was the second time in as many weeks the Rams had blown a half-time lead to lose.
Coach Tim Friend said his side needed to do some soul searching after the loss.
“I believe we are a better side than they are, but they played much better than we did so they deserved to get the points,” he said.
“We can’t blame injuries or people who aren’t on the park for the loss because we have to get the job done with the guys who are out there.”
Friend was also frustrated by the umpires’ interpretation of holding the ball, which he said was paid several times despite players’ lack of prior opportunity to dispose of the ball.
Jonathon Hornsby and Bryce Hateley were among the Rams’ best.
Taylors Lake coach Deek Roberts said he was thrilled by the consistent contributions he got from each member of the team.
“Apart from Nathan Koenig, nobody was outstanding, but it was a full team effort,” he said.
“The last quarter was havoc and both teams made a lot of mistakes, but we were able to take our chances a bit better than what they were.”
