The Sydney-based company has already taken steps to triple its manufacturing capacity across plants in three countries in anticipation that an eight-year clinical trial that is due to report initial results in March will show its innovative targeted internal radiation therapy should be used as a first line treatment.

Sirtex’s radioactive microspheres, SIR-Spheres, are already approved for use in the treatment of inoperable liver cancer. But most oncologists regard the product as a second line of defence, or salvage treatment, when other therapies have failed. This usage has so far done Sirtex well, with net full year profit after tax rising 30.6 per cent to $23.9 million on the back of record dose sales.

But the company’s SIRFLOX trial, which has been running since 2006 and is due to report its initial results in March 2015, seeks to show that when SIR-Spheres are combined with standard chemotherapy they can increase the time that a patient’s cancer stays in remission. More detailed results from the 532-person trial will be released in late May or early June 2015, the company said.

Even if the clinical trial does not show a significant improvement Mr Wong said Sirtex’s current growth rate is sustainable, based on the use of SIR-Spheres as a “salvage therapy”. But he said a positive result from one of the company’s clinical trials "should see an acceleration or step change in our growth”.

Mr Wong said the company plans to spend $10 million in the preparation for the clinical trial result, and in the early months following the announcement, to educate oncologists about its product. The money will mostly be spent on building a committee of oncologists from around the globe who advise on strategy and spread the word to their medical peers. “We have confidence [the trial] will be positive and that’s why we’re making a further investment this financial year in preparing the company for the release of SIRFLOX,” Mr Wong said.

The Sydney-based company, which pierced the $1 billion market capitalisation point for the first time last month, just missed expectations of net profit of $24.6 million. It had net profit of $18.3 million in the same period last year.

Revenue in the year ended June 30 rose 30.9 per cent to $131.3 million, which beat consensus expectations of $127.8 million, data compiled by Bloomberg said.

In the full-year, dose sales rose 17.3 per cent to 8561.

The stock has gained 59 per cent in the past year, compared with a 10 per cent rise in the S&P/ASX200 index. The share price initially jumped to an all time high of $20.73, from Tuesday’s closing price of $20.04. But by 13:45pm AEST in trading the stock was down 0.2 per cent to $19.98
