Coach
Shannon Argall, Laharum: Not hard to pick this one. Argall has kept the Mountain Men’s premiership defence right on track despite some off-field distractions this season. The team looks in better form than it did last year, and is undefeated in 2014.
Backs
Chris Oliver, Edenhope-Apsley: Edenhope-Apsley’s defence is strong, conceding about 64 points each game, and Oliver is a big part of that. He has the ability not only to shut down an opponent, but to provide rebound out of defence. He was picked in this year’s interleague team.
Josh Beddison, Kalkee: The man they call ‘Rock’ kicked more than 90 goals in his past two seasons, but has been effective as a key defender this year. He still finished with 39 goals, including hauls of 11 and nine in matches.
Ash Pekin, Natimuk United: The versatile Pekin booted 18 goals this year, but lines up in a back pocket in the team of the year. He has been the Rams’ best and most consistent performer this year, and was an interleague representative.
Half-backs
Brent Forsyth, Harrow-Balmoral: An outstanding performance as captain of this year’s interleague team showcased Forsyth’s skill. The joint reigning Dellar Family Medallist has continued to lead Harrow-Balmoral’s revival as coach.
Josh Mibus, Kalkee: Mibus just keeps turning in solid performances year after year. He customarily plays at centre-half-back as opposed to full-back, but is more than capable of filling either role.
Scott Heath, Harrow-Balmoral: Heath turned in a good performance for the green and gold in this year’s interleague game, and has been a fixture in the Roos’ best players.
Centre
Pat Purcell, Taylors Lake: It has been a good year for Purcell who, along with Deek Roberts, helped lead the Lakers’ climb up the ladder. He was named in the best players’ list in his first 12 games but missed in the final five. He has twice been runner-up in the Dellar Family Medal.
Daniel Easson, Laharum: When you play every game and are selected in the best 15 times – including seven best-on-ground performances – for an undefeated team, you are going to be picked in the team of the year. Easson’s potential was clear when he performed a key tagging role on Steve Schultz in last year’s grand final .
Jason Kerr, Noradjuha-Quantong: Hamstring issues hampered Kerr in the second half of the year, but he was still clearly the Bombers’ best player this season. He was also named on a wing in the interleague team.
Half-forwards
Sean Mantell, Swifts: Mantell has had a blistering run home, named best or second-best in six of the Baggies’ past seven matches. He could make some noise at the Dellar Family Medal vote count.
Shannon Argall, Laharum: Argall booted more than 100 goals as a key forward last year, but has been used all over the ground this season. Despite plenty of time in the ruck and some in defence, he showed he can still kick big bags of goals.
David Lang, Rupanyup: Few would argue Lang has not been Rupanyup’s best player this season. Another forward with versatility who can push up the ground and has all-round skills.
Forwards
Deek Roberts, Taylors Lake: Roberts has had a top season and creates headaches for the opposition wherever he plays. His pace is handy in the midfield, but he is equally damaging as an elusive small forward. He kicked 35 goals, was named best on ground for the interleague side, won the Helloworld, Wimmera Mail-Times champion footballer award and is the team of the year captain.
Ben Martin, Swifts: A number of players could have made legitimate claims for this spot, but it goes to Martin because he was the most consistent and only missed one game. His 60-goal tally led the league.
Oliver Braithwaite, Laharum: One of Laharum’s great strengths is the even-ness of its team, and it would be easy to argue there should be more than three Mountain Men in the side. He was named in the interleague team.
Ruck
Mick Phelan, Harrow-Balmoral: This year has been his best season of district league football. He showed plenty in the ruck and as a forward in the interleague game, and has been named best-on-ground for the Roos three times this year.
Steve Schultz, Kalkee: Schultz is a chance to add to his three Dellar Family Medals this year. Only twice has he been excluded from the best players’ list and he kicked 38 goals.
Dave McLeish, Edenhope-Apsley: He doesn't always get a lot of hype, but is a solid midfield contributor every week for the Saints. He’s another versatile player in a team that is full of them.
Bench
Brent Christie, Edenhope-Apsley: The tough midfielder has not quite recaptured the form that took him to last year’s Dellar Family Medal, but is still the driving force behind Edenhope-Apsley’s midfield.
Callum Hobbs, Harrow-Balmoral: Hobbs was among the district league’s best in a narrow interleague loss to Heathcote.
Sam Weddell, Noradjuha-Quantong: The young Bomber has had a breakout season, particularly in the second half with four consecutive best-on-ground performances. Can play at either end of the ground and was almost the game-breaker against the Heathcote interleague side with four goals.
