Producer Sue Maslin, casting director Charlotte Seymour and producer's assistant Katia Nizic were in Horsham on Monday and Tuesday to host auditions for extras for the movie adaption of Rosalie Ham's best-selling novel.
Stars such as Kate Winslet and Australian Liam Hemsworth are cast in lead roles and will head to the Wimmera later this year to film within a 40-kilometre radius of the city.
Ms Maslin said she was overwhelmed by the number of people wanting to audition.
She expected to get through about 40 auditions a day.
There has been strong interest from younger people throughout the Wimmera.
But Ms Maslin said she was still looking for men.
"It's looking for those older men," she said. "What we want is all shapes and sizes.
"People are not coming along because they're not your typical movie star material. We want those people."
The casting team will return next month to continue auditions.
Wimmera extras would feature in two scenes in the movie a football scene and a wedding and dance scene.
Those who auditioned were quizzed about their football skills and waltzing abilities.
"The fun thing with the wedding is it's a film set in the 1950s," Ms Maslin said.
"There'll be some really great outfits."
Ms Maslin said those who auditioned needed to be committed to film during late November and early December.
Horsham couple and Horsham Arts Council members Nick Wilson and Jessica Robarts auditioned together.
Mr Wilson said he had previously been involved in a three-day short film but otherwise had no movie experience.
"It's a bit of fun and a good experience," he said.
"I think it'll be good it'll put the spotlight on the area for a while."
Ms Robarts said auditioning was an opportunity too good to miss.
She said it would be great to be involved.
"I'm interested in the processes," she said.
Both said they would like to meet Titanic star Winslet.
Peter Jelly and Jodi Haigh also auditioned together.
Mr Jelly said his partner was the actor but they both wanted to be involved.
"It's good for the town," he said.
Murtoa's Rod Hammond wasn't nervous before his audition.
"I've made a fool of myself plenty of times before. It can't be worse than what I've done before," he joked.
He described the opportunity to audition as a challenge.
