Mr Wakeling toured the college on Tuesday.
Campus general manager John Goldsmith said it was always great when politicians visited the college.
“We have a lot of good things happening here, and it’s great the minister can see them,” he said.
“You never know what doors it can open, and it is always easier when discussing funding down the track if the politicians have a first-hand account of the college.”
Mr Goldsmith said Mr Wakeling saw the whole campus, including the classrooms, accommodation, farm and Bayer CropScience’s wheat and oilseed breeding centre.
Mr Wakeling said it was a great opportunity to tour regional Victoria.
“We have invested $1.2 billion in training, and in the Grampians region funding has increased by 12.5 per cent and enrolments are up 20 per cent,” he said.
“So we are spending more money and have more students studying.
“This was also a great opportunity to talk to students at the college about what they are studying.”
Mr Wakeling said it was important young people were trained in industries where there were jobs and agriculture was an example of a top-employing sector.
“All Victorians expect their government to provide quality training and focus that training in areas where there are jobs,” he said.
“We know the best way to help young people get a job is to provide quality training.”
Mr Wakeling also visited Federation University at Horsham while in the region.
