The service will celebrate National Meals-on-Wheels Day on Wednesday, recognising the significant contribution the program makes to communities Australia-wide.
“Meals-on-wheels often gives people the chance to remain in their homes rather than going into care,” Mrs Bennett said.
“A hot, nutritious meal during the day is extremely important for them.
“For volunteers, meals-on-wheels gives you a really good feeling at the end of the day.”
The Horsham service has about 100 people on its books.
“Our motto is ‘more than just a meal’,” Mrs Bennett said.
“Sometimes we are the only people they see all day.
“We act as an extra check. One of my volunteers might come back and say someone wasn’t feeling very well today. I’ll follow up with a phone call to that person or one of their family members to make sure they are okay.”
Mrs Bennett said schools, churches, Apex, Rotary and individual volunteers helped run the program.
“We have some wonderful volunteers, but we are always searching for more,” she said.
She said people could call 0427 829 569 for more information.
National Meals-on-Wheels Day is celebrated annually on the last Wednesday in August.
The celebration recognises the work of about 80,000 volunteers at more than 740 branches across the country.
