The Eagles were within touching distance of the Saints all day, but apart from a 10-minute period in the second half of the third quarter, they never really looked like winning.
"We were scrapping all day and we were never completely out of it, but we were never really in it either," Inkster said.
It was the Eagles' first loss to the Saints this season after two wins in the home and away season.
The Eagles, who finished third on the ladder, will have eight days to prepare for a do-or-die semi-final against the winner of yesterday's elimination final between Ararat and Minyip-Murtoa.
Inkster said his side knew what it needed to do to turn its form around.
"I think we're aware of where we went wrong we didn't compete for long enough," he said.
"To go down by that much we didn't really think we were in the game for 70 per cent of it. You've got to take some positives out of that and build on it.
"That's what we'll have to do this week there's no point dwelling on it."
While the Eagles have now lost three of their past four games, Inkster said the side was improving.
"We're still building the past four weeks we've been improving each week," he said. "We've worked hard to get the double chance and now we've got to make the most of it."
The Eagles coach said his side looked like a different team when it took the game on in the third term.
"That's when we can be dangerous, but to do it in patches you obviously can't win finals," he said.
"It's something we've got to continue to work on. They were just better than us for probably 80 per cent of the game."
