Race Around Dimboola was designed to boost students' literacy and numeracy skills.
Multi-age groups of students visited 24 sites in the town, each linked by a clue from a picture story book.
Organiser and leading teacher Sandra Gove said the activity was well received by students.
"It was a great day for all the kids, parents and teachers - it worked out as well as it could have," she said.
"The kids all want to do it every day of the week.
"They were all fairly happy about the experience and exhausted afterwards - a lot of the kids in the afternoon were very tired."
Mrs Gove said the race turned out to be more challenging than some students had expected.
"There were a lot of people who went in different directions and realised it wasn't that particular place they needed to be at," she said.
"As far as getting to know Dimboola, I think they've all learnt a bit more."
Parents and teachers were group leaders, as the students navigated their way around the race.
Mrs Gove said the mix of ages of the students had worked well, with the older students eager to help co-ordinate the groups.
"Our year five buddies made sure all the kids had a role during the journey, whether it was reading the instructions or working out which question number they were up to," she said.
"The older kids were really caring about the children in their group."
She thanked all parent volunteers who contributed to the race's success.
