St Arnaud Secondary College year 12 Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning students ran a schools Relay For Life as a community project.
The personal development skills class organised the relay to help raise awareness of and money for cancer research and prevention and support programs.
The event raised about $1300 - above the students' goal of $1000.
Student Simon Elliott, 18, said the event was a success.
“The teachers really got behind it and gave up their classes so we could run it,” he said.
He said seven students helped organise the relay, which started at 11.30am and finished at 6pm.
Simon said St Arnaud Primary School and the town’s Rotary Club joined St Arnaud Secondary College for the relay. Country Fire Authority volunteers cooked on a barbecue donated by the St Arnaud Lions Club.
Afternoon rain forced a candlelight ceremony to be under shelter.
But Simon said the rain did not dampen spirits.
“Even when it was pouring down rain, there were teams still walking,” he said.
“It was really good.”
Simon said the school would consider hosting a relay again next year.
Relay For Life aims to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have died.
Events often go for 12 to 24 hours, but school events run for seven hours.
Teams of up to eight people keep a baton going around.
