The classy Swifts utility was awarded the AFL Victoria medal for best on ground in Saturday’s grand final triumph against Laharum.
He also collected his first premiership medal to go along with the Dellar Family Medal he won as the league’s best and fairest in 2012.
Whitehead’s composure and precise ball use in the midfield and at half-back stood out on a day when tackling pressure was intense.
He said the team had always known it could win the premiership despite Laharum being heavily favoured.
“I knew we could win it, but we just had to play our football,” he said.
He said he was surprised but happy to walk away with the best on ground medal.
“I didn’t expect the best on ground, but I’ve got just about every medal now so I’m happy with that.”
