The week-long event, from October 6-10, is the official launch of the 2015 Horsham and Districts Relay For Life.
Relay For Life committee chairmanager Kingsley Dalgleish asked people to support the event.
He encouraged businesses to dress their windows in purple or hosting events in their workplaces.
"A number of schools are having purple days,'' he said.
"Businesses have also mentioned having purple morning teas.''
Groups can use Paint the Town Purple as a fundraiser for their relay teams.
Mr Dalgleish said businesses that decorated their shop fronts or windows could win prizes.
The major prize is four nights' accommodation for two people at the Bay of Palms Resort in Queensland.
Mr Dalgleish said previous winners had enjoyed their time away.
"I'm sure it will be the same again this year,'' he said.
The Wimmera Mail-Times donated the major prize.
Mail-Times features co-ordinator Katherine Magee said the newspaper had supported Paint the Town Purple since its inception.
"We're proud to be supporting the event again this year,'' she said.
"We encourage everyone to get involved.''
Mr Dalgleish said previous prize-winners had enjoyed holidays away in the past.
He thanked the Mail-Times for its support.
"The Mail-Times has been recognised by the Cancer Council Victoria at the Relay For Life state summit,'' he said.
"They regularly mention the support we receive from our local newspaper.
"A lot of centres are envious of our support from our local media.''
Mr Dalgleish said businesses could register to be a part of the Paint the Town Purple window competition by calling committee members Cass Dalgleish on 0408 545 560 and Felicity Taylor on 0408 821 478.
