Sixty criminals released on parole were responsible for 97 serious, violent or sexual offences in the year to June 2014, the Victorian Adult Parole Board has conceded in an annual report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.

However, the decisions to release most of those individuals were made prior to sweeping reforms made in the wake of the murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher at the hands of man on parole in September 2012.

The board tabled its first annual report following a damning review by former High Court judge Ian Callinan, which was handed down in April 2013 and found several violent criminals had been released into the community.

In the year since Mr Callinan's recommendations were handed down, the number of offenders granted parole fell 36 per cent from 2051 in 2012-2013 to 1313 in the past financial year, and those denied parole orders have jumped by 96 per cent.
