The team of Tara Jasper, Aily McAuliffe, Ellie Robertson and Anna Bush competed at the School Sport Victoria secondary track and field championships on Friday at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, smashing a 21-year-old record.
They completed the relay in 51.18 seconds, beating the previous record of 51.60 seconds set by Mentone Girls' Secondary College in 1993.
St Brigid's College sports co-ordinator Tamika Burdett said it was an outstanding effort from the team.
"It's excellent for them to get this result after all the training and hard work they put in," she said.
"When they started out at Greater Western level and trained through the holidays we thought they might have a chance to break the state record.
"We knew they could do it, but it all comes down to the changeovers on the day and they did really well."
The relay team was part of a large Wimmera contingent at the state championships at Lakeside Stadium.
Students from St Brigid's, Horsham College, Donald High School, Stawell Secondary College, Murtoa College, Warracknabeal Secondary College, St Arnaud Secondary College, Edenhope College, Nhill College and Ararat's Marian College competed. Goroke native Duncan Cameron also represented Hamilton's Monivae College.
In addition to the relay team's record-setting performance, there were plenty of strong individual results.
Murtoa's Darcy Edgerton threw a massive five-metre personal best to win gold in the boys 12-13 years javelin.
His throw of 44.62 metres was another new state record, beating the previous mark of 44.17 metres.
Edgerton also finished sixth in the 100 metres, eighth in long jump and fifth in the 200 metres.
Bush had a good day, winning the 15-year-old girls triple jump with a jump of 11.18 metres. She finished second in the 90-metre hurdles and picked up two bronze medals in the 100 metres and long jump.
Warracknabeal's Bridget Powell came away with a gold medal in the girls 18-20 100-metre race, posting a time of 12.67 seconds.
It proved to be a good race for the Wimmera, with Marian College's Sarah Blizzard finishing just 0.02 seconds behind Powell in second place.
Blizzard won another silver in the girls 18-20 200 metres with a 27.06-second run.
Edenhope's Jesse Iese was another Wimmera athlete to claim a state gold medal, winning the boys 12-13 years shot put with a throw of 13.98 metres.
St Brigid's student Tara Jasper won her first ever state medals by placing second in the girls 14-year-old 100 metres, third in the long jump, fifth in the 90-metre hurdles and sixth in triple jump.
Duncan Cameron won a trifecta of silvers, placing second in the boys 18-20 years 100 metres, 200 metres and triple jump.
Other Wimmera competitors were Kyle Postlethwaite, Emersyn Kennedy, Alyce Campbell, Eric Woollett, Kaitlin Gebert, Nicholas Tobin, Alice Astbury, Fraser Heard, Zoe Nicholson, Jacqueline Scott, Tom Walker, Josh Kelly, Aleesha Robertson, Sam Bone and Kelsey Clark.
