Children's Week is a national program recognising the skills, talents, achievements and rights of young people.
Horsham Rural City Council playgroup co-ordinator Cindy Francis said playgroups were focusing on early literacy for the week.
She said the playgroups had also learned about vet hospitals throughout the term.
"We chose Nick Bland's picture book King Pig from The Children's Book Council of Australia shortlist," she said.
Mrs Francis said children from Horsham Supported Parents Playgroup created colourful sheep and pigs and sang nursery rhymes.
As an added treat, Mrs Francis brought in an orphaned calf from her property for the children to pat.
"It was fantastic," she said.
"A lot of the children don't often get the opportunity to see a big, live animal."
Mrs Francis said Children's Week was an opportunity to celebrate childhood and the achievements of young people.
"It's a time to stop and realise how precious our children are and how important it is to stop and play every day," she said.
Mrs Francis said she had free copies of King Pig and other resources for any playgroups in the region who wanted to participate.
She said people could call her on 0427 532 856 for more information.
Children's Week wraps up on Sunday.
