Aviation Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips announced a commitment of $100,000 from the State Government’s Regional Aviation Fund at the airport on Thursday.
Northern Grampians Shire Council will also contribute $100,000.
Cr Tony Driscoll said the upgrade would mark the first major improvements at the airport since 1980.
‘‘The RAF funding will enable us to preserve the existing sealed surfaces and carry out some minor works to improve the internal access road, airside security fence and signs,’’ he said.
‘‘These measures are expected to provide all required facilities at the airport for the next 10 years.’’
The St Arnaud Airport is used by regional and visiting aircrafts, the air ambulance and other emergency services.
It also supports crop dusting and fire-suppression activities.
Cr Driscoll said the upgrade would enhance safety and operation for airport users and provide increased security to the public.
‘‘In addition, it is going to deliver much-needed basic amenities and services, and increased opportunities for additional storage hangars,’’ he said.
He said the project was due to be completed by May.
