The Wimmera Mail-Times Dimboola Fishing Classic is the Wimmera’s only boat and bank fishing event.
It will run on the Wimmera River from Dimboola Weir to Ackle Bend.
The classic is a major fundraiser for Dimboola’s Allambi aged care centre.
Organiser Stoph Pilmore said Allambi was one of Dimboola’s most treasured organisations.
‘‘It has served the community since the 1960s and continues to offer supportive and compassionate aged care with highly qualified staff,’’ he said.
‘‘Allambi’s staff work extremely hard to ensure all the residents’ best interests are met.
‘‘They even host an annual fund-raising event to help buy much-needed equipment for the centre.’’
Mr Pilmore said while the classic had a range of purposes, it was first and foremost a major fundraising event for Allambi.
‘‘As the Dimboola Fishing Classic is a subsidiary fundraising committee to the Allambi board of management, all entry fees will be directed to the Allambi board,’’ he said.
Mr Pilmore, who is an Allambi board member, said the classic organisers had developed significant partnerships to ensure the event would be a success, even in its inaugural year.
‘‘We’ve partnered with the Hindmarsh Tourism Association to cross-promote events in the Hindmarsh Shire, such as the Jeparit Fishing Competition at Easter and the Nhill fly-in scheduled for next year,’’ he said.
‘‘We’re also grateful for the huge support from our major naming rights sponsor the Wimmera Mail-Times for the next three years to help us cement the event as the premier fishing event in the Wimmera.
‘‘The Ad Group has been a massive support in the development of the Dimboola Fishing Classic, from the logo design, the development and support of our website and concepts to sell sponsorship opportunities.’’
Mr Pilmore said the classic had formed a relationship with Dhipirri Barra and Sportsfishing Lodge and Riverfun Houseboats.
‘‘It’s set the scene for all our future events, offering the first prize of a once-in-a-lifetime fishing experience and holidays,’’ he said.
‘‘To have Wimmera Outdoors supporting with administration has made the event accessible to people in Horsham and that support has been extremely valuable.
‘‘Wimmera Design and Print has made it possible for the Dimboola Fishing Classic to pop up in towns throughout Victoria, NSW and South Australia.’’
Mr Pilmore also thanked S and S Building Contractors, Wimmera Electrical, Web Con Marine and Millers Civil Contractors for their sponsorship and support.
He said people could register for the Dimboola Fishing Classic at Wimmera Outdoors in Horsham and The Canvas Man in Dimboola during the week.
They could also register at the Dimboola rowing sheds on Friday from 4pm and on Saturday from 7am.
Entry will be $20 for adults and $10 for children under 16 who register before the event, while registrations can be made on the day at an additional cost.
First, second and third prizes are up for grabs in senior and junior sections.
The senior first prize is valued about $10,000.
‘‘We invite all to descend on Dimboola on Saturday to help us show support for our sponsors and for Allambi,’’ Mr Pilmore said.
He said people could visit dimboolafishingclassic.com.au for more information or to register.
