Rally joint-organiser Katherine Lewis said she was overwhelmed by the community support at the event.
She said about 1000 people of all ages attended the rally.
‘‘People can see the flow-on effect of the mining proposal,’’she said.
‘‘We’d like to thank everybody who came to the hill and, to those who couldn’t come but were there in spirit, a thank you to them too.’’
Stawell Gold Mines general manager Troy Cole was at the rally and thanked the crowd for its support.
Stawell businesses also showed their support on Friday, with donations for the rally from businesses including Newton’s Butchers, JR’s U Hire N Drive and Westlift Crane Hire.
Ms Lewis said the next step was to get a petition of support for open-cut mining at Big Hill to the State Government.
She said people could sign the petition at Sneak A Peak, Rumba and Ruby Road.
* A previous version of this story said the petition could also be signed at Stawell Newsagency. The petition is not available at the newsagency.
