The 54-year-old was trapped for more than three hours after the crash on November 13.

Victoria Police Sergeant Anita Brens said the man's car was stationary on the freeway when it was rear-ended by a truck.

The car then struck another truck, pushing it into a second car, which then hit a third truck.

Three cranes were needed to lift one of the trucks off the car.

The Footscray man was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with chest and internal injuries.

He died on Sunday night.

Sergeant Brens said police were yet to formally interview the driver of the truck.

Detective Sergeant Chris Carnie from the major collision investigation unit said the investigation was continuing and all witnesses were urged to come forward.

"We have done a lot of work around piecing together this collision and we are aware there were a number of other vehicles in the vicinity when it happened," Detective Sergeant Carnie said.

"We really need these drivers to come forward so we can speak to them and get a full picture of what's happened."
