More than 30 people gathered at the Horsham Police Station for a White Ribbon Day breakfast to honour the role police and emergency services play in responding to family violence incidents.
Wimmera White Ribbon Committee chairman Justin Amor told attendees police were vital to stopping violence against women.
‘‘We simply cannot imagine the challenges officers face being first responders to incidents of domestic violence – you are all so brave,’’ he said.
Acting Inspector Brendan Broadbent said family violence was a big issue in the Wimmera.
‘‘Victoria Police have come a long way in the way we manage family violence situations,’’ he said.
‘‘In the past it was more about enforcement and keeping the peace.
‘‘Now we’re more about working in partnerships and linking up with welfare agencies, courts and the Department of Human Services.’’
‘‘These domestic situations not only affect the people who have been assaulted, they are far reaching among other family members and friends.’’
Yarriambiack Shire Council formally adopted its plan to combat family violence in the shire.
