Liam Hemsworth, who plays footy hero Teddy McSwiney, needed teammates, which meant casting director Charlotte Seymour needed to find extras who could take on the roles.
She quizzed everyone who auditioned for other parts about whether they knew any footballers.
Cue Laharum Football Netball Club former netball operations director Rachel McGennisken, who went to the casting call.
‘‘I said, ‘take me to training’,’’ Ms Seymour said.
‘‘Most of them are involved now.’’
While some footballers jumped at the opportunity, others needed a little encouragement.
Laharum player Ben Peucker, who is an extra in the film, rang team-mate Heath MacInnes’ boss Robbie Plazzer to ensure Heath’s leave would be approved.
‘‘When Heath went in to ask, Robbie said ‘you should do it’,’’ Mr Peucker said.
After suffering a broken thumb a week before filming, Mr Peucker’s role changed.
He was on set and watched his team-mates film a footy scene with Hemsworth on Wednesday.
He said filming was different from what he expected.
‘‘I’m surprised by the volume of people behind the scenes,’’ he said.
Noradjuha-Quantong’s Dalton Cross also found filming was much different from what he anticipated.
He said there was a lot of waiting around involved.
‘‘I’ll never look at a movie the same way,’’ he said.
Mr Cross cut his hair for the role – but his brother Dustin refused and was not involved in the film.
