Mr Wilson was nominated for a Music Theatre Guild of Victoria award in the category of best cameo performance for his role as a palace guard.
‘‘It was a small role – I played the palace guards with Luke Mitton. I was the dumb guard and he was the grumpy guard,’’ he said.
‘‘I’ve been in heaps of shows with the council before and this was one of the smallest roles I’ve done.
‘‘It was a good upbeat show and we got lots of positive feedback.’’
Mr Wilson said he was gobsmacked to be nominated.
‘‘It’s a fairly big deal to get a nomination,’’ he said.
‘‘I wasn’t confident of getting the award, but we went to the awards night just in case. They read out my name and the rest was history.
‘‘It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever won – I was shaking when they announced it.’’
Mr Wilson was presented with a glass trophy, which he placed on his mantelpiece.
Council president Simon Dandy said he was rapt with Mr Wilson’s win.
‘‘He deserved it,’’ he said.
Other performers Belinda Elliott, Amy Anselmi and Larissa Riddell were nominated for best ensemble performance for their roles.
Pam Deckert received a commendation for best actress in a lead role for her performance as Puss.
‘‘To everyone else who was nominated, while they didn’t win, they were winners for being nominated,’’ Mr Dandy said.
He said the council’s production was the first nonschool production of the show.
‘‘It’s great to say we’ve won an award for it,’’ he said.
‘‘The writer is quite keen to get some material and photos from us.’’
Mr Wilson said being part of the council was fantastic.
‘‘I encourage anyone who is interested in acting or performing to join up,’’ he said.
